Round 1 Fight Night: 01-09-10

January 14, 2010

I’ve covered a few fight nights for Shihan Jeff DeVore, and I have to say that this was the most fun. It must have been a combination of standing above the cage and all the TKO’s because it was a blast.

I think the new vantage point allowed me to get some great footage, hopefully that setup will be available next time!

Hungry for more? Here’s another video I shot for Round 1!

A new perspective on cage fighting, literally

More MMA!

Last time I shot Round 1 Fight Night for Shihan Jeff DeVore, I was sitting cage-side and having a blast. As you can see here, I was shooting through the cage and that worked pretty well. This time they had an improved setup with a little platform attached to the cage:

Up on my perch

It was about a foot and a half square, so I had to be pretty careful, especially when the cage started shaking from the fighting. Sure my feet got tired, but it was worth it to be perched above the action.

I am editing the video now, and hope to have it up very soon. You know where to find it once it’s done!

Summer Cage Wars

September 11, 2009

On August 22nd I had the pleasure of shooting another Round 1 Fight Night with my wife. I always enjoy the shows that Shihan Jeff DeVore puts on, but this one was by far my favorite. Not only was it my first time seeing a cage fight, it was my first time seeing live MMA fighting. And being ringside made it ten times better. Being ringside also ups your chances of being hit with blood. Alida and I both got a little shower during one of the bouts. Take a look.

His blood was on our faces!

Alida was thrilled!

That was a ton of fun, and Alida and I were laughing pretty hard when we realized what had just happened. By the way, to see some of the photos from that night, along with her other amazing work, check out Alida Duff Sullivan Photography on Facebook!

So a couple of days after the fight I posted a teaser of the video I was making, and got some really great feedback. Shihan DeVore had tons of people asking when they’d be able to see the entire thing. Well I finally have it finished, so sit back and enjoy Round 1 Fight Night’s Summer Cage Wars!

Summer Cage Wars… and more!

August 24, 2009

Saturday night was Round 1 Fight Night’s Summer Cage Wars! It was an intense mixture of kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA fights, and Alida and I were sitting cage-side to do the photos and video! I love shooting these events, and can’t say enough about how awesome Shihan Jeff DeVore is.

I will be working on the video very soon, and will post it as soon as it’s done. Until then, I have a little teaser. During one of the fights Alida and I were both splattered with some blood from a fighter. We took photos of each other with the blood on our faces. I don’t have those right now, so I’ll have to post those when I post the finished video. What I do have ready now is a clip from the fighter that bled on us. Enjoy!

Aside from that, here’s what else is going on:

  • Found out we didn’t place in the LLCU video contest. Bummer, but I had fun making it, and if I made a few people laugh, that’s cool with me.
  • The iris ring on my new XHA1 is faulty, and I have to send it in for repairs. At least it’s under warranty, so it wont cost anything.
  • I’m finishing up the dog video for the contest I alluded to in a previous post. I’ll be sharing more on that later.
  • Alida shot senior portraits for Shavon, and I tagged along again, this time with a real camera instead of my Xenon.
  • Alida and I shot a wedding a week ago. We had a ton of fun in Champaign, even when we got stormed on in the park!
  • A few weeks ago I tagged along with Alida for a huge family portrait session at Nelson Park. Got some nice behind-the-scenes footage for that.
  • And, as always, I’ve been shooting lots with Troupe Dynamic. My newest assignment: blooper reels!

So that’s what I’m up to now. I have lots to edit, and that means lots to post!

I met Shihan Jeff DeVore last year when I was shooting a fun health video with Annie Getsinger for the Herald & Review. We went to DeVore Academy in Mt. Zion where he put her through an intense kickboxing workout to show her what it involved. During that trip he challenged both of us to start taking classes. It was an extremely generous and rewarding offer that we both took full advantage of, and the doors have been open to us ever since. Now, as my gut probably reflects at the moment, I fell off the wagon and haven’t been to kickboxing class in quite a while, but Annie kept with it. As a matter of fact she just had her first boxing match, and her first win, last month. That video will be up on the H&R website soon, and I’ll be sure to post the link here on my blog.

Last August, Shihan DeVore hosted a boxing night here in Decatur and I brought a camera ringside. Here is a small glance at the event:

As I mentioned earlier, I also shot at a more recent event, but you will have to wait to see that video on the Herald & Review’s site. But until I get that posted, I can be glad that although I haven’t been part of the action in a while, I still get to be around it. I’m really lucky to have met Jeff DeVore, and look forward to punching and kicking again soon.
