Enhance it! – Part 1

May 28, 2011

Another short comedy is starting to come to life!

My alma mater, Millikin University, was nice enough to let me set up lights in a computer lab for “Enhance It!”

Doug made a great Santa. He makes an even better CIA chief...

Tuesday night Alida and I met with Mitch Morrison to set up lights, and set them up we did. Mitch has a great talent when it comes to lighting. Combined with Alida’s eye for composition we were able to get everything ready and blocked out for our shoot on Wednesday night.

When Wednesday rolled around, I was worried the huge storm system that had been hovering over us for 24 hours was going to cancel my shoot. Tornado watches and flash flood warnings didn’t help.

ADM-Scovill Hall in front of a nice angry storm...

Luckily for me, the rain didn’t stop my cast and crew from showing up, ready to go.

Performance Art

December 5, 2010

I met Craig Ryan last January when Alida took photos of his art.

We went to the Studio Gallery at Millikin University’s Kirkland Fine Art Center and shot his performance/installation piece, “Access Denied.”

"Entrapment" or "Oceans 12"?

Read about the piece and see more photos here on Craig’s website.

Afterward I was really impressed and thought it would have been neat to shoot video.

In October, he contacted Alida about shooting another piece, “Untitled,” in the same gallery.

The flyer said, "Face painting at Millikin"

This time he was looking for video as well, which was great because I would have been tempted to shoot it either way.

More photos and info about that piece here.

If you followed those links to read about his work, I’m sure you were already tempted to browse around some of his other work. If not, do it. Here is his website:

Even though Alida and I didn’t create those works of art, it was cool to be involved in the process and document it for the artist.

This is just one of the many reasons I love what Alida and I do together.

Box City chowder

November 15, 2010

Last week I covered a pretty neat event at my alma mater, Millikin University.

Can you tell I wasn't expecting to have my photo taken? Thanks Chris!

At “box city,” students simulated a night of homelessness, building shelter out of cardboard boxes and huddling around burn barrels for warmth.

I know a few people who would hit me for holding an iPhone over a fire

The reporter writing the story for the Herald & Review was Allison Petty, and while she was soaking in the atmosphere, she also stood in line to eat the “chowder”, a mixture of canned-goods. As you can see here, she really appreciated me documenting the tasting of the chowder.

My small summary of the event really doesn’t do it justice, so I recommend reading Allison’s full story here, and watching the following video.
